About the Company

Christine Van Der Hurd has long been admired as one of the most creative minds in the interiors and textile world. Over a career spanning more than 50 years, she has forged a reputation for bold use of colour, texture and technique, rooted in a deep knowledge of hand weaving, printing and embroidery.

After graduating from Winchester Art College in 1973, Christine quickly found success selling her print designs to Osborne & Little, Liberty of London, Yves Saint Laurent and Etro. By the late 1970s she was in New York, receiving commissions from design heavyweights Angelo Donghia and Jack Lenor Larsen. In 1982 she and her husband David Hurd founded *Modern Age*, a pioneering downtown gallery that introduced contemporary European furniture to America. It became a hub of the city’s design and art scene, working alongside the likes of Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz, and was instrumental in bringing British designers Tom Dixon, Ron Arad and Danny Lane to the US market.

Alongside the gallery, Christine’s own rug designs began attracting major commissions from international design firms such as Pentagram, Gensler and Beyer Binder Belle. Retail collaborations soon followed, including projects for Henri Bendel and The Limited Stores, establishing her as a sought-after creative voice on both sides of the Atlantic.

Today, Christine leads Vanderhurd from her studio on Portobello Road, London – just steps away from her father’s antique shop, which first inspired her as a child in the 1960s. The company specialises in cut pile rugs, flat weaves and dhurries, as well as fabrics and wallpapers, all of which are produced in close partnership with skilled artisans. The emphasis is on preserving traditional techniques while evolving them for contemporary design. Bespoke commissions form a core part of the business, with the studio equally at home creating unique one-off pieces or delivering large-scale hotel and retail projects.

Christine has designed for Cappellini, Liberty London, Thomas Goode and Louis Vuitton; she has worked with Adam Bray, India Jane Birley for Annabel’s, and Kit Kemp of Firmdale Hotels. Recent projects include residential commissions with Rita Konig, Nicola Harding and Leroy Street Studio, while new collaborations with emerging designers such as Jermaine Gallacher continue to expand the brand’s reach.

Vanderhurd’s work is now part of the permanent textile collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum – recognition of a career that has consistently blended tradition, innovation and artistry.
