About the Company
A piano has always been a powerful presence in a room, but for many years it was something of a relic: large, black, formal, and often left silent. Edelweiss was founded with the idea that a piano could be something else entirely – a sculptural centrepiece for the luxury home, as captivating to look at as it is to hear. Their instruments are designed not only for musicians, but for anyone who loves live music and beautiful design. With built-in self-playing technology, they transform the piano into the ultimate entertainment piece.
The company’s roots go back to 1975, when Cambridge physicist Roy Norman bought a piano for his living room and set about restoring it. His experiments led to 1066 Pianos, which soon became Britain’s leading restorer. By the 1990s the workshop had rebuilt instruments from nearly every brand in the world, laying the foundations of knowledge that would eventually give rise to Edelweiss in 2008. A showroom at Harrods followed in 2017, cementing its place in the luxury market.
Today, Edelweiss is still a family-owned British piano builder, now in its third generation. Every piano begins its story in the high spruce forests of the European Alps, where fine-grained tonewood is harvested as it has been for centuries. In Fulbourn, Cambridge, the company’s workshops bring together woodworkers, metalworkers, and finishing specialists who combine traditional craftsmanship with discreet self-play engineering. From spray shop to stringing bench, each instrument is hand-finished, voiced, and tested to exacting standards.
What sets Edelweiss apart is its custom approach. No two instruments are alike: clients can specify finishes, colours, and detailing to make their piano uniquely their own. The design can be as bold or as understated as the setting requires, whether destined for a contemporary glass penthouse or a traditional country house.
The result is a piano that is both a showpiece and a living instrument. Played by hand, it responds with the precision and warmth of the finest European grands. Activated by the Virtuoso Self-Playing System, it delivers concert-quality music at the touch of a button. In either mode, it embodies what Edelweiss has stood for from the beginning: innovation, artistry, and the reinvention of a timeless classic.
