About the Company

Savoir has been handcrafting the world’s most luxurious beds since 1905, when impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte commissioned them for The Savoy Hotel. From the very beginning they set a new standard in comfort, combining innovation with meticulous craftsmanship. The beds became so sought after that guests were soon commissioning their own, and the Savoy Bedworks was born, later changing its name to Savoir. Over the decades, their reputation only deepened, with discerning clients – from royalty to world leaders – recognising that nothing compared to a Savoir night’s sleep.

Today, fewer than 1,000 beds leave the workshops each year. Every piece is made entirely to order, crafted in London and Wales by artisans who dedicate up to 120 hours perfecting a single bed. There are no production lines, no shortcuts. A single craftsperson takes responsibility from start to finish, tailoring each detail to the client’s body, style and needs, before signing their name to the finished piece. Techniques handed down through generations remain central – hand-teased horsetail, painstaking star-lashed springs, and hand-stitched Trellis ticking, a pattern dating back to Lady D’Oyly Carte.

At the heart of Savoir is a reverence for materials. Only the finest natural fibres are used – horsetail, wool, cashmere, yak hair, and cotton – chosen not just for their comfort, but for their natural breathability, durability and ability to regulate temperature. These materials create mattresses that support the body, improve REM sleep, and last for decades, unlike synthetic foams that degrade over time. Even details such as oiled flax cord, once used by archers at Agincourt, are specified for their endurance.

Sustainability, for Savoir, is not a trend but an inheritance. A bed built to last a lifetime is the antithesis of throwaway culture. Natural fillings biodegrade, steel springs are recycled, and clients are encouraged to restore and reupholster rather than replace. Apprentices are trained to safeguard knowledge, ensuring the skills survive well into the future.

With each passing generation, Savoir continues to raise the bar, launching numbered designs and fulfilling extraordinary commissions for yachts, jets and private homes. Yet the principles remain unchanged: a slower, calmer way of working that puts quality above all else. In a restless world, Savoir believes that sleep is the one thing worth taking time over.
