About the Company
Soane Britain has built its reputation on an uncompromising commitment to British manufacturing. Since its founding in 1997, the company’s mission has been to design and make enduring furniture, lighting, fabrics, and wallpapers that stand the test of time. Every element of a Soane piece is made in Britain by a network of the finest craftspeople, whose skills are preserved, nurtured, and passed on to future generations.
Integrity in manufacturing has been at the heart of Soane’s work for more than twenty eight years. Each design is made in close collaboration with specialist workshops, many of which have honed their crafts for generations. Alongside quality, Soane places great importance on sustainability, working carefully to minimise environmental impact and ensure ethical practices across its supply chain. In recognition of services to British manufacturing and craftsmanship, co-founder Lulu Lytle was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List in 2024. Today, Soane has showrooms in London and New York.
The company’s origins lie in a summer-long journey taken by Lulu in 1997, when she visited workshops across Britain. Inspired by the skill and passion of the makers she encountered, she set out to create furniture with the quality and longevity of the finest antiques. Nearly three decades later, Soane directly employs more than 100 people, including a third who are craftspeople, as well as many more through partnerships with around 40 independent workshops.
Championing British craft remains central to Soane’s ethos. The company invests continually in its own and partner workshops to secure the future of traditional skills. In recent years it has taken ownership of a Dorset chair making workshop, established in-house patination and upholstery teams in Leicester, and in 2024 acquired a long-standing upholstery workshop in Somerset. Most significantly, Soane revived Britain’s last remaining rattan weaving workshop, safeguarding a skill that was close to extinction.
Rattan has since become a hallmark of Soane’s collections. When the last English rattan workshop, Angraves, went into administration in 2010, Lulu established Soane’s own Leicestershire base, ensuring these historic techniques survived. The workshop now runs a thriving apprenticeship scheme, training a new generation of makers in a craft that combines integrity, longevity, and beauty
